Grand Rapids Kitchen Remodel Cost

The cost of remodeling your kitchen

What is the Average Kitchen Remodel Cost?

This is a very common question but not one that is easily answered. Kitchen remodel costs can vary greatly, depending on the size of your kitchen, the materials you choose, and the contractor you hire. You can expect to pay anywhere from $10,000 for a partial refresh all the way to $150,000+ for a full new luxury kitchen. We’ve found the average cost for a remodeled kitchen to be around $50,000-60,000. Again, it is going to depend on a range of factors.

The average cost of a kitchen remodel may seem high but why does it cost so much? There are several factors that contribute to the high cost of kitchen remodels. First of all, the size of your kitchen is a major factor. If you have a large kitchen, you can expect to pay more than someone with a smaller kitchen. This is because more materials and labor will be required to complete the job.

A major factor that affects the cost of kitchen remodels is the quality of materials you choose. If you want high-end materials, such as granite countertops and custom cabinets, you can expect to pay significantly more than someone who chooses lower-end materials. Of course, the quality of the materials you choose will also affect the durability, look, and lifespan of your kitchen, so it is important to choose wisely.

Another factor that affects kitchen remodel cost is the contractor you hire. If you choose a well-known, reputable contractor, you can expect to pay more than someone who chooses a less experienced or unknown contractor. However, well-known reputable contractors are that way for a reason. When you hire one, you know that you will be getting top-quality service and they are already aware of the common issues ahead of time. This will help keep your kitchen remodel on track and allow it to be completed in a more timely manner. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. Good contractors will also be able to help coordinate with electricians or plumbers for a smooth project.

Is kitchen remodeling worth it?

In most instances a kitchen remodel will always be worth it. Whether you plan on staying to enjoy it or selling. Realtors have confirmed that kitchen and bath remodels, when not overdone, can increase the value of your home. However, an elaborate and major remodel and the expense that comes with it may not be worth it. If you only plan on staying in the house for the next 3-5 years, it might not be worth it for you to do a full kitchen renovation, however, if you plan on staying for 6+ years it could be totally worth it! Your kitchen and bathrooms will have an effect on the sale price of your home if you do choose to sell. This added value to your home can help offset some of the expenses you incurred in remodeling.

The Cost of Cabinets

The cost of cabinets is going to greatly depend on the size of your kitchen and the features you want.

High-end Custom cabinets

Top of the line custom cabinets for an average-sized kitchen can cost upwards of $40,000+.

Mid-range Cabinets

These cabinets for an average size kitchen can cost anywhere from $20,000-40,000.

Low-end Cabinets

These cabinets will be very basic, have no special features, and won’t be quality construction, meaning they won’t stand up to heavy use and last a long time. For an average size kitchen, expect to pay around $12,000

The Cost of Countertops - Most Popular

Grand rapids kitchen countertops

Granite Countertops

There are a few factors that will affect the price, such as color. A good average price range for granite countertops is $50-200 per square foot. To stay on the lower end of this range, choose a more common color and style. Granite countertops will also require some maintenance that you may want to consider in the cost.

Quartz Countertops

These countertops can offer a wider variety of colors as pigments can be added during production. The quartz countertop's average cost will be between $50-150 per square foot. Quartz countertops do not need any resealing and will have low to no maintenance.

Marble Countertops

While marble countertops are beautiful, they’re also expensive. An average range for marble countertops is $75-250. To stay on the lower side of the range you will be limited in color options and shades. Marble countertops also will require some maintenance to keep them in good condition. Marble countertops will have the highest maintenance cost of all countertops.

The Cost of Flooring

Solid Hardwood Flooring

As with most building materials, there is a couple of price ranges depending on quality. On average solid hardwood flooring will cost $5-9 per square foot. This does not include installation which can add $5-8 per square foot in labor. In most cases, we will recommend engineered hardwood flooring over solid hardwood flooring because of a decrease in the expansion and contraction of the wood.

Engineered Hardwood Flooring

With engineered hardwood flooring, there is a wider range of prices because there is more manufacturing involved. Depending on the construction of the backing and thickness of the veneer, your cost will change. Thicker veneers are more expensive but can also be refinished more times which will provide a greater lifespan and value. Low-end engineered hardwood flooring will be between $4-6 per square foot, mid-range will be between $6-10 and high-end engineered hardwood flooring is between $8-14 per square foot. The installation will run $4-10 per square foot.

Luxury Vinyl Tile / Luxury Vinyl Plank

This has become a popular choice for homeowners. LVP and LVT will cost $4-12 per square foot. Just like engineered hardwood flooring, there are more manufacturing differences which cause the wide range in price. The installation will also run $4-10 per square foot.

Comparing Estimates

As there are so many variations in products, it is important to make sure the products are identical when comparing the price of multiple estimates. Slight differences in the product being quoted can cause big changes in price. Especially true with wood flooring as there are different species, grades, widths, and solid or engineered variants. When comparing prices from multiple distributors, make sure it is an apples-to-apples comparison.

The Cost of Labor

The labor cost will be a substantial part of your overall cost. The labor will be dependent on what you want to be done. If you’re keeping the same layout and just want to upgrade/update your kitchens look, expect $15,000 in labor for these minor upgrades. If you’re looking to totally remodel your kitchen and change the layout (move walls, plumbing, etc) it will cost substantially more, expect to pay $80,000. On average the cost of labor for a remodel will be between $20,000 to $30,000.

The Cost of Appliances

Appliances are another area that features a wide range in prices, basically, how much do you want to spend?

Refrigerator

You can get a basic refrigerator for as low as $600 or a $13,000 fridge that has an air purification system to keep produce longer.

Range

The pricing for a range is similar to that of refrigerators, basic ones can be $600 while a top of the line range can cost as much as $15,000

Dishwasher

A new dishwasher can run anywhere from $300-3000.

Microwave

These will be your least expensive appliance, typically costing between $100 and 500 for a countertop microwave or $500-2000 for a built-in microwave.

Conclusion

There’s plenty you can do to update your home.  Kitchen and bath remodels keep your home fresh and up to date and can usually help recoup your money if you sell within 5-7 years.  Most importantly to consider though, do you love your home?  If not, then it's time to make sure you do!
