What is the difference between Western Red / Coastal and Inland Red Cedar? Both are the same species. Think of the difference as a different grade of cedar, not a different tree. Western red grows faster and in a different soil type than the inland, which grows primarily in Idaho, Washington, British Columbia, and Montana to the eastern front of the Rockies.
