Thuja plicata, commonly called western or Pacific red cedar, giant or western arborvitae, giant cedar, or shinglewood, is a species of Thuja, an evergreen coniferous tree in the cypress family Cupressaceae native to western North America. The provincial tree of British Columbia, it has extensive applications for Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest. What is the difference between Western Red / Coastal and Inland Red Cedar? Both are the same species. Think of the difference as a different grade of cedar, not a different tree. Western red grows faster and in a different soil type than the inland, which grows primarily in Idaho, Washington, British Columbia, and Montana to the eastern front of the Rockies. The Western Red grows quite large and fast and shows very few knots.
